About Sound Distillery
Sound Distillery was set up by Jean-François Machet. It is a laboratory that embraces research, experimentation, uncertainty, and discovery. It places particular importance on the transition from thinking the sound to feeling the sound - two approaches that are not incompatible - and on creating a rich sound that is in perfect harmony with the project.
About Jean-François Machet
Sound and music has been an essential and integral part of Jean-François’ life from a very early age. He first experienced the transformative and emotive power of sound on watching the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in the cinema. A technical problem caused the final fight scene in space to be played on mute. Without the sound effects and music, the curtain was pulled back, the illusion was broken, revealing all the visual techniques to create the image. Creating the transcendent nature of sound has since been a lifelong study.
Jean-François began working in sound in the age of reels, audio tape and splicing. Over the years, he has worked at France’s number one radio station Europe 1, and production companies in Paris such as Graffiti 5&21, Chez Jean, DDB production, Tout Pour S’Entendre. He recorded France’s biggest talents of the Eighties and Nineties; and at many of the most prestigious sound studios such Acousti, Studio des Dames, Guillaume Tell, Palais des Congres, Davout, and more. He has worked as a sound director, producer, sound designer, mixer, a sound and video editor, and as a voice coach for actors and video production companies. Jean-François has worked on animation films, short and long fiction films, theatre productions, documentaries and advertising. While living in London between 2010 and 2021, Jean-François went back to basics and successfully completed a Masters in Music Production and Sound Engineering at the institute located at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
